I Didn't Expect to Feel Welcome
Feeling Like You Don't Belong
I stepped inside a church on Sunday.
It was the first time in five years.
I almost turned around before I reached the door.
Not because I didn't want to go in.
Because I wasn't sure I belonged there.
Sometimes, when you've spent years feeling like you don't fit, you start expecting every new place to prove you right.
You assume people will notice your mistakes before they notice you.
You assume your past arrives before you do.
So you keep your distance.
You convince yourself it's easier not to try.
But that isn't what happened.
No one asked me to explain where I'd been.
No one asked me to justify my past.
No one expected me to become someone different before they welcomed me.
Maybe Belonging Begins Here
For a little while, I was simply another person in the room.
And that made me realise something.
Belonging isn't always about finding people who know your story.
Sometimes it's about finding people who don't ask you to carry it before they choose to accept you.
For a long time, I believed acceptance was something you had to earn.
I thought I had to become quieter.
Less anxious.
Less complicated.
Less... me.
I thought I had to prove I was worthy of taking up space.
That if I worked hard enough to hide the parts of myself that felt broken, then maybe I'd finally belong somewhere.
But maybe belonging doesn't work like that.
Maybe real belonging begins the moment you stop having to audition for a place in someone's life.
Maybe it's found with the people who let you arrive exactly as you are.
Flaws.
History.
Questions.
And all.
I think we're all searching for somewhere we don't have to explain ourselves quite so much.
Somewhere we don't have to hide the messy chapters.
Somewhere we don't have to apologise for the parts of ourselves we're still trying to understand.
Somewhere we're allowed to arrive before we've figured everything out.
You Don't Have to Hide Who You Are
For years, I carried the weight of believing there was something fundamentally wrong with me.
That my differences were flaws.
That my mistakes defined me.
That my past would always speak louder than the person I was trying to become.
On Sunday, I heard something different.
Not because someone magically erased my past.
Not because every question suddenly had an answer.
But because, for a little while, I was reminded that my worth isn't measured by the hardest chapters of my life.
That mistakes don't erase who we are.
That healing doesn't require perfection.
And that maybe...
My voice deserves to be heard too.
I don't know where this journey goes from here.
I still have questions.
I still have days where belonging feels difficult.
But I left that afternoon carrying one thought home with me.
Maybe belonging isn't about finding perfect people.
Maybe it's about finding the places where you're allowed to be an imperfect one.
And sometimes...
The places we least expect become the places that remind us we're welcome.
For so long, I thought acceptance meant becoming someone easier to understand. I'm slowly learning that real acceptance begins when you no longer have to hide who you are.
